As a key element of the Shipwreck Coast Master Plan, the new ‘Saddle Lookout’ replaces outdated viewing areas, offering a superior, safer, and more accessible experience to preserve and enhance this iconic destination.

Connex is proud to be part of this landmark project, providing structural steel workshop drawings for the lookout structure and the stainless-steel handrails leading to the lookout.

The structure features two 50m long rectangular trussed steel frames, designed to resemble clap sticks. The northern “clap stick” rests on the terrain and the other cantilevers towards the horizon. Although this cantilevered section appears to float, the structure is actually supported by the northern structure, through an intricate web of braces and struts with highly detailed welds and bolted splices.

Each “clap stick” is divided into three sections for efficient transport through the tight Great Ocean Road and safe lifting on site. Inside, there is a series of maintenance walkways to ensure easy inspection and upkeep.

Connex also worked closely with cladding contractors to coordinate fixing and support details that conceal the structural steel, ensuring a seamless installation process and an elegant final product inspired by the local Aboriginal culture
